ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION
Wunder. Wonda. Wannenraum.
On 16 November 2018, Breitwieser showroom turned into a hotspot for architects and designers from all over the world. The programme was as exciting and varied as the event name itself: a product launch, a design competition, and thrilling speeches of high-level speakers were part of the evening. Around 600 guests followed the programme items of the architecture event „Wunder. Wonda. Wannenraum.“ with great interest. The evening was rounded off by a design competition with 11 architectural firms that had already started with the preparation months before the competition.
Breitwieser and 100 Häuser, an architecture magazine focusing on country-specific construction culture, and the participants travelled to South Tyrol, namely to the Covelano marble quarry. With a height of 2,200 metres it ranks among the highest situated active marble quarries in Europe. The purity and hardness of the white marble from the National Park Stilfserjoch has impressed and convinced renowned architects, designers, and artists since centuries and is thus used worldwide.

POSSIBILITIES
„The objective of the competition was to foster the combination of handcraft and design and to experience the manifold characteristics and advantages of natural stone, and, subsequently, to convey them.”, says Manuela Hötzl, Chief Editor of 100 Häuser and curator of the competition. For this purpose, all participants selected a block of marble and created their very own interpretation of a tub out of it. The results were presented to an expert jury, consisting of Kristina Breitwieser, Roman Delugan (DMAA Vienna), Rainer Mutsch (Studio Rainer Mutsch), and Thomas Willemeit (GRAFT Berlin), who then determined a winner by awarding points. The best interpretations were awarded a price during the event and presented to numerous interested visitors.
The Award winners
Since the jury members Roman Delugan (DMAA Vienna) and Thomas Willemeit (GRAFT Berlin) could not agree on an overall winner, they decided to announce two winners. One of them was awarded the DMAA price and the other one the GRAFT price. Both projects will be realised and created out of the selected stone.
